cold mountain hymn
I like this hymn---and this old way of singing. Youtube has samples of this kind of singing on their site too.
Here are the words:
Farewell, vain world! I'm going home!
My savior smiles and bids me come,
And I don't care to stay here long!
Sweet angels beckon me away,
To sing God's praise in endless day,
And I don't care to stay here long!
(Chorus:)
Right up yonder, Christians, away up yonder,
O, yes my Lord, for I don't care to stay here long.
I'm glad that I am born to die,
From grief and woe my soul shall fly,
And I don't care to stay here long!
Bright angels shall convey me home,
Away to New Jerusalem,
And I don't care to stay here long!
(Chorus:)
Right up yonder, Christians, away up yonder,
O, yes my Lord, for I don't care to stay here long.
(Chorus:)
Right up yonder, Christians, away up yonder,
O, yes my Lord, for I don't care to stay here long.

I don't think I've heard that before, but I love it!
ReplyDeleteI also love this song. I thought 'Cold Mountain' was an excellent movie.
ReplyDeleteYes, I like the sentiments and agree with something of that, and I do like the way of singing as well.
ReplyDeleteWe used to sing all acappella in the Mennonite church in which I grew up, and it was good. Though I'm grateful they use instruments now, which I think enhanced our worship this past weekend at my mother's church.
I think that way of singing uses shape notes. American Angels is a cd that uses that style of singing.
ReplyDeleteYup, it is shape note singing. I wish we had more of this getting together and singing this way--
ReplyDeleteI grew up singing songs with shape notes...Acapella. I have heard this song before...my grandmother's church sang it when I was a child. It brought back a happy memory.
ReplyDeleteDusty, that is so cool---I love this music!
